Backyard Landscaping Ideas

Backyard landscaping ideas are legion, and can be used to transform a common old block of land into something quite marvelous. Just about any backyard can be transformed to a higher level with the right ideas and the right amount of effort, let us not forget: attitude, imagination, and creativity, will go a long way in assisting, too. Given a short amount of time, you will be able to make something beautiful out of your ordinary backyard block of land.

One of the most effective methods of achieving this, is with the use of plants for landscaping. Filling a garden with plants can help transform any backyard into lively place of beauty. Over time, the plants that you have chosen for your backyard landscape, will give the place its own personality, as they grow and spread their branches.
If you wish to give your home that stately old english look, some largish evergreen trees will give that noble look that you mostly see in elegant mansions and homes. The same elegance can be implied with the addition of large evergreens in your backyard.
Color is important in any backyard, and the addition of flowering plants here and there will add contrast . Roses lined along a path-way always makes for a pleasant if not grand stroll. A garden bed, specifically for roses, gives a magnificent confetti effect, full of life with the added bonus of cut-flowers for the house, and gloriously heady perfume all around.
If you are wanting color in your garden, but don”t have the spare time required to care for garden beds regularly, you could always create a wildflower garden. Wildflower gardens require little maintenance in order to succeed, and give your backyard a bit of a rustic look, that you may prefer over mown lawns, wickedly sharpe edges, and seemingly sterile backyard landscapes.
Filling your backyard with plants certainly solves the problem of spending part of your precious weekend trying to mow large expanses of lawn, by reducing the lawn area that you need to mow. A vegetable garden acheives much the same result.

Another way to reduce some mowing area in your backyard is the application of “hardscapes”. Hardscape, refers to all those additions to your landscape, that are not actually growing – like decks, paths, patios, etc. This is another landscaping idea that you can incorporate, with the use of plants or trees, to make your backyard even more interesting – if not practical. You could have a rock-garden, fences or walls, possibly a fish-pond or fountain, a pergola or deck perhaps, to create alternative elements of beauty in your backyard.
The use of hardscapes, to the exclusion of everything else, is not only unattractive, it is also cheating.
Not only is it pretty lazy, but also, you are cheating your family, and indeed yourself, out of the beauty and serenity, that only a planted garden can afford. Try not to over do the big bits.

If you are considering your pool, landscaping prior to actually putting the pool in, you may be in the best position of all.

When it comes to in ground pools you will indeed need to put a lot more focus in fencing and probably vegetation that helps conceal things to your liking. At the same time, you can definitely bring about great landscapes to go with them. Just expect more expense in the pool landscaping along with the additional expenses of in ground pools. Often the venders for your pool will have many resources to help you as well on this path.

Other factors you want to consider with pool landscaping are how many people will be there to enjoy the pool, and how comfortable do you want them to be? Surface Preparation

All surface grass and vegetation, you will need to removed from were your wall will be. You do not want to use this for backfill. You will need to start at the lowest point, you will neat to dig a base trench or ditch the length of your wall. Depending on the type of wall you are building, you will need to dig the trench to work with the type of the wall that you are building. Let’s say you are building a Gravity Wall; you will need to dig your trench 18” wide and about 7” deep. Will maybe you need to build a Reinforced Wall. To hold a much heaver load. This will be wider and deeper as well. You may go 24” wide, and you may dig as deep as 12”. You now need to level the area you are working with, now compact the .25 or .75 this will be the base rock you will use for the first level of the block you are using. A rule of thumb is 4” deep, for the Gravity Wall and with the Reinforced wall you will need about 6” Now it is very in portent that you level the length of your wall, you may need to adjust here and there to have a nice level wall to start working with.

To start the base start at the lowest elevation, Set your first block on top of the base you compacted and leveled, put your blocks close together, be shire each block is level. Be shire to fill the hollow cores of the blocks. And fill behind your blocks with stone. This will help drain the water. Use your hand tamper to compact the dirt and the drain field. Be shire to keep the blocks level. Now you are on your way to a good looking Retaining Wall.

I like to build retaining walls. I have helped a couple of my friends. One bout a new house; and in the back yard the hill was washing a way, form the rain. That was a big job.

Before you start a job like this check your local codes to see if you need a permit!!! If you keep your retaining wall 3’ high or less. Well check the Codes. My friend did not. Preparing the foundation is the most important. Depending the size of your projects. You may need to dig deeper; and fill with class 5 fill. Then compact the fill with a hand tamper. Always make sure it’s is level. Back to when I helped my friend with his retaining wall. With the large hillside. You need to think about the water drainage, can be a problem. The water will start washing away the fill behind the retaining walls. To stop this problem we laid a moisture membrane to take the water to the drain tile we put in to drain the water away!! There are many way’s you can build your Retaining Walls. Some to take the look; of your yard to a new level. You may live on a lake and it’s washing away your land. You may need to talk to a land cape contractor for this job. I do hope this will help answer some of your questions on How to build retaining walls.
